The holiday season is a time for joy, generosity, and celebration—but it’s also a time when household waste tends to skyrocket. From wrapping paper and decorations to food waste and unwanted gifts, Christmas can leave a heavy footprint on the environment. To help combat this, our community is launching a project focused on reducing waste during the holiday season. By making small, intentional changes, we can all have a more sustainable Christmas without compromising on festive cheer. Here are five simple ideas to get started:

1. *Rethink Gift Wrapping*

Did you know that most wrapping paper isn’t recyclable? Instead of using traditional wrapping paper, try using reusable options like fabric wraps, old maps, newspaper, or even a reusable gift bag. You can also make wrapping part of the gift—like wrapping a kitchen item in a new tea towel!

2. *Shop Mindfully*

When choosing gifts, opt for experiences over items, or select sustainable, locally made products. Consider gifts that come with minimal or zero packaging. Thoughtful homemade gifts, such as baked goods or personalised crafts, are also a meaningful way to show you care.

3. *Reduce Food Waste*

It’s easy to overestimate how much food we need during the festive season. Plan meals ahead, and try to only buy what you’ll use. If you have leftovers, get creative with new recipes, or share extras with friends or neighbours. Composting food scraps is another great way to prevent waste.

4. *Choose Reusable or Natural Decorations*

Instead of buying new plastic decorations, look for natural options like pinecones, dried oranges, or garlands made from foliage. You can also upcycle old decorations or make your own from recyclable materials. After the season, store items carefully so they last for years.

5. *Say No to Unwanted Gifts*

We all receive gifts that we don’t use or need. Politely communicate your preferences to loved ones ahead of time, suggesting ideas or opting for a Secret Santa to reduce the number of unnecessary items. If you receive something that doesn’t suit you, consider regifting, donating, or swapping it.

By making small changes like these, we can all contribute to a less wasteful Christmas season. Let’s embrace a greener holiday and celebrate in ways that bring joy to both our families and the planet!
