“Turnips! Yes, turnips! I didn’t know we planted turnips?” Were the shouts of Year 2 as they checked  and weeded their garden plot last Friday. Well, we didn’t plant turnips; they were  overgrown radishes that had been lost under the rampant growth of tomatoes. “Next year we will support the tomatoes and harvest the radish when ready.”

Just some of the fun and lessons learned by the students of Titchfield Primary School on their Harvest Day last week. Despite surprises, the one thing that all the students and teachers agreed on was that the garden had grown brilliantly since planting in May. Regular watering by the students and the exceptional spring weather meant each year group had a jungle of vegetable plants to admire and get to grips with.

After checking their beds and progress of their plants, they harvested what they could and left  tomatoes, butternut, peppers, and chillies to continue growing over the summer. After a generous watering, each class left the garden in the confidence that with the help of Eco Titchfield there would  be a lot to pick come  August . Not only that, they left us with some great ideas as to what to grow next year, strawberries, potatoes, and cucumbers being top choices.

All in all,  a great start to the garden project which will  grow from strength to strength with the continued enthusiasm and green fingers of  Titchfield students. Well done everyone !
