Titchfield’s Swifts – An evening with Professor Catharine Gale
An Evening with Hampshire Swifts – A community talk hosted by EcoTitchfield
📅 Tuesday 2nd June 2026 | 7:30pm
📍 Titchfield Village Hall, Titchfield
Every summer, swifts arrive in Hampshire after an extraordinary journey from central Africa. For a few short weeks, their screaming parties above rooftops are one of the unmistakable sounds of an English summer — before they vanish south again as quickly as they came.
But that sound is getting harder to hear. Swift numbers in Hampshire and across the UK have fallen by more than 65% over the past 25 years.
The main reason is simple: modern buildings don’t give them anywhere to nest.
Hampshire Swifts is a registered charity working to reverse that decline — surveying nest sites, installing swift boxes on homes, churches, and public buildings, and pushing for swift bricks to be built into new developments across the county.
This talk is a chance to hear directly from Hampshire Swifts about the work they’re doing, what’s happening locally, and how residents across Titchfield and the surrounding area can play a part — from putting up a nest box to spotting and recording nest sites near you.
The event runs for approximately one hour with time for questions.
Suggested donation: £3.50 (the cost of a cup of coffee) This covers the cost of the evening. No one will be turned away for want of a donation.
Hosted by EcoTitchfield as part of our Greening Campaign. Find out more at ecotitchfield.com.
