Last weekend, a small but mighty team of local nature enthusiasts came together in Barry’s Meadow to take part in our very first BioBlitz survey — and what a fantastic effort it was!

Armed with notebooks, cameras, and a lot of curiosity, our volunteers set out to record as much local wildlife as possible in a single morning. Together, they managed to capture a huge list of plants and trees (flora) and confirm evidence of wildlife and birds (fauna) all around the meadow. From rustling leaves to birdsong overhead, it was wonderful to see just how alive our local patch really is. 🐦🌳🦋

A real highlight was the team’s use of the Seek app 📱 — which turned out to be an absolute revelation! It helped us identify species on the spot, making the whole experience more fun, interactive and accurate.

🌟 Top Tip: Try the Seek App!

If you love exploring nature, Seek by iNaturalist is a brilliant (and free!) tool to help you identify plants, insects, fungi, and animals in real time using your phone’s camera. It’s perfect for families, school groups, or anyone curious about the natural world around them.
📲 Download it before your next walk and see what you can discover!

We were also incredibly lucky to be guided by Katy from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, whose expert knowledge — and infinite patience! — helped us make sense of what we were seeing. Having her support gave the team real confidence, and we can’t thank her enough for sharing her time and skills with us. 🦉💚

We’re now waiting for Katy’s full summary of the findings and her recommendations, which we’ll be sharing soon with our supporters and followers. This survey is more than just a list — it’s a valuable snapshot of our local biodiversity, and it will help us plan future projects and opportunities to protect and enhance nature here in Titchfield. 🌱✨

And this is just the beginning. 🌍
One of our next initiatives will be to invite our whole community to become citizen scientists, carrying out mini nature surveys in their own gardens 🏡. We’ll encourage everyone to record their findings on the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust survey page — including their postcode — so we can build up a rich picture of the wildlife across where we live. 🐝📍

To everyone who came along: thank you for giving your time and energy to help build this picture of our local wildlife. Your efforts are helping lay the foundations for positive, practical action in the years ahead.

Together, we’re proving that small steps make big changes. 🌍💪
