How Eco Titchfield is helping you cut waste before it begins.
If we need reminding of how much of the Earth’s resources we are using, then the Earth Overshoot Day 2025 lands on July 24, the date when humanity will have used up nature’s entire annual budget of ecological resources and services, according to the Global Footprint Network, the international sustainability organisation that pioneered the Ecological Footprint.
To maintain this, we need the equivalent of 1.8 Earths, so time for us all to look at what we use and, more importantly, what we waste.
Waste in this world is a major contributing factor to climate change. We simply use too many resources and are living in a Western world of consumerism. A third of all food produced is wasted. Meanwhile, the recycling lobby has been doing a great job to try to show that this is the answer. But put simply, recycling is about waste management, and we need to address waste prevention if we are all going to contribute to the slowing of climate change.
Before we even need to think about recycling, there are three steps that we could all take before the need to recycle:
So how can Eco Titchfield help to make it easier to help you achieve fewer items going to the recycling centre at Segensworth?
-
The very first and possibly most contentious is the Reduce or Prevent, as do you need the item in the first place? A tricky choice, while being bombarded by commercials and social media to buy more stuff. If the item brings you great happiness, then who can argue, but if after a short period of time, it is just sitting there unused, then perhaps it wasn’t really needed.

If you simply want a new book to read, then the Titchfield Village Trust library in the postbox, opposite the village hall, provides a great option for dropping off one book and picking up another: https://www.titchfieldvillagetrust.com/post/titchfield-s-book-exchange
A great example of Reuse or Refill is to refill your containers (no wasted packaging every time you need more supplies of regular consumables). Then Eco Freaks in Havant is introducing a doorstep refill service, so call into the Havant shop and see what is on offer. They also recycle nearly all packaging that many of the bigger shops refuse to take. There is also a refill shop in Wickham, Natures Nook Refillery at Old Timbers in Wickham Square – hello@naturesnookrefillery.co.uk

Eco Titchfield aims to make it easier for you to Reuse and Repurpose, so we are looking at Repair Cafe options (as this involves the cost of insurance, we may need to scale a little to justify the expense). In the meantime, Gosport Repair Cafe is running on 14th June and 12th July, so book your items in via this link: https://ti.to/repair-cafe-gosport/
We are looking for volunteers to help us establish a Titchfield repair cafe – so if you’d like to step forward and be part of the team/committee then please drop us a quick email at info@ecotichfield.com
We also have a few ideas of events that we can bring to Titchfield over the rest of 2025 to put an emphasis on waste management and to make it easier for residents in Titchfield to prevent waste, as an option before recycling.
